Kamma and Sila

Sila - a pali  word original meant a rock - in Buddhism it is used to mean virtue/morality and is linked with five precepts. The word rock and the five precepts could be linked by the word foundation. Sila is a foundation for a natural way to act.

Kamma means action.
kamma In a nut shell        good, evil and beyond Ajahn Puyutto ( a very good ebook -pdf)    a study guide

Why the theme?

We are investigating Kamma and Sila, as away of looking at our actions and the result of actions. Kamma is about cause and effect, if we do X we get Y. If we reflect on our actions we can choose whether we want to do that actions. Kamma is also linked to our intention, for example a pair of scissors can be used to cut a piece of paper or can be used to hurt somebody, this is a choice. So intention is about taking responsibility for one actions and whether we want to give up doing that actions is about renunciation.

The ultimate goal of Buddhism is to not generate any kamma how can we do this?

Explaining this in words is very difficult because going beyond kamma is going beyond words, concepts and ideas, its more about non-action - stillness. By learning meditation we can appreciate and recognise stillness or non-action. When we come from this place, we can respond to a situtation rather than react to it. We flow with life. There is still the result (vipaka-kamma) of past actions but we have choice to how we react to these.

We will also be learning and practise this chant
