The beauty of life is, while we cannot undo what is done, we can
see it, understand it, learn from it and change so that every new
moment is spent not in regret, guilt, fear or anger but in wisdom,
understanding and love.

Suttas are not meant to be 'sacred scriptures' that tell us what
to believe. One should read them, listen to them, think about them,
contemplate them, and investigate the present reality, the present
experience with them. Then, and only then, can one insightfully
know the truth beyond words.
Venerable Sumedho
(The Buddha teaches his young son)
[The Buddha:] "What do you think, Rahula: What is a mirror
for?"
[Rahula:] "For reflection, sir."
[The Buddha:] "In the same way, Rahula, bodily acts, verbal
acts, and mental acts are to be done with repeated reflection.
"Whenever you want to perform a bodily act, you should reflect
on it: 'This bodily act I want to perform — would it lead
to self-affliction, to the affliction of others, or to both? Is
it an unskillful bodily act, with painful consequences, painful
results?' If, on reflection, you know that it would lead to self-affliction,
to the affliction of others, or to both; it would be an unskillful
bodily act with painful consequences, painful results, then any
bodily act of that sort is absolutely unfit for you to do. But if
on reflection you know that it would not cause affliction... it
would be a skillful bodily action with happy consequences, happy
results, then any bodily act of that sort is fit for you to do.
"While you are performing a bodily act, you should reflect
on it: 'This bodily act I am doing — is it leading to self-affliction,
to the affliction of others, or to both? Is it an unskillful bodily
act, with painful consequences, painful results?' If, on reflection,
you know that it is leading to self-affliction, to affliction of
others, or both... you should give it up. But if on reflection you
know that it is not... you may continue with it.
"Having performed a bodily act, you should reflect on it...
If, on reflection, you know that it led to self-affliction, to the
affliction of others, or to both; it was an unskillful bodily act
with painful consequences, painful results, then you should confess
it, reveal it, lay it open to the Teacher or to a knowledgeable
companion in the holy life. Having confessed it... you should exercise
restraint in the future. But if on reflection you know that it did
not lead to affliction... it was a skillful bodily action with happy
consequences, happy results, then you should stay mentally refreshed
and joyful, training day and night in skillful mental qualities.
...[similarly for verbal and mental acts]...
"Rahula, all the priests and contemplatives in the course of
the past who purified their bodily acts, verbal acts, and mental
acts, did it through repeated reflection on their bodily acts, verbal
acts, and mental acts in just this way.
"All the priests and contemplatives in the course of the future...
All the priests and contemplatives at present who purify their bodily
acts, verbal acts, and mental acts, do it through repeated reflection
on their bodily acts, verbal acts, and mental acts in just this
way.
"Therefore, Rahula, you should train yourself: 'I will purify
my bodily acts through repeated reflection. I will purify my verbal
acts through repeated reflection. I will purify my mental acts through
repeated reflection.' Thus you should train yourself."

"If beings knew, as I know, the results of
sharing gifts, they would not enjoy their gifts without sharing
them with others, nor would the taint of stinginess obsess the heart
and stay there. even if it were their last and final bit of food,
they would not enjoy its use without sharing it, if there were anyone
to receive it"
Itivuttaka 18
Consciously or unconsciously, every one of us does
render some service or other. If we cultivate the habit of doing
this service deliberately, our desire for service will steadily
grow stronger, and will make, not only our own happiness, but that
of the world at large.
Mahatma Gandi
The greatest good you can do for another is not just share your
riches, but reveal to them their own.
Disraeli
Half the spiritual life consists of remembering
what we are up against and where we are going.
Ayya Khema, "When the Iron Eagle Flies"
... And the other half is taking complete personal responsibility
for getting there!
Joshua Bryer
What you are is what you have been, and what you will be is what
you do now
anonymous
We are responsible for what we are, and whatever
we wish ourselves to be, we have the power to make ourselves. If
what we are now has been the result of our own past actions, it
certainly follows that whatever we wish to be in the future can
be produced by our present actions; so we have to know how to act.
Swami Vivekananda
Don't let anyone tell you that you cannot know the
truth for yourself or that you cannot achieve yourself spiritually
without being tied to a temple or church. You were not born a spiritual
slave. You are the authority who distinguishes what is true and
untrue, spiritual and unspiritual.

Neither fire nor wind, birth nor death
can erase our good deeds.
Buddha
Winning gives birth to hostility.
Losing, one lies down in pain.
The calmed lie down with ease,
having set

Dhammapada
All men and women are born, live suffer and die;
what distinguishes us one from another is our dreams, whether they
be dreams about worldly or unworldly things, and what we do to make
them come about... We do not choose to be born. We do not choose
our parents. We do not choose our historical epoch, the country
of our birth, or the immediate circumstances of our upbringing.
We do not, most of us, choose to die; nor do we choose the time
and conditions of our death. But within this realm of choicelessness,
we do choose how we live.
Joseph Epstein
The only reason we don't open our hearts and minds
to other people is that they trigger confusion in us that we don't
feel brave enough or sane enough to deal with. To the degree that
we look clearly and compassionately at ourselves, we feel confident
and fearless about looking into someone else's eyes.
Pema Chodron
One day Ananda, who had been thinking deeply about
things for a while, turned to the Buddha and exclaimed:
"Lord, I've been thinking- spiritual friendship is at least
half of the spiritual life!"
The Buddha replied: "Say not so, Ananda, say not so. Spiritual
friendship is the whole of the spiritual life!"
Samyutta Nikaya, Verse 2
Conquer the angry man by love.
Conquer the ill-natured man by goodness.
Conquer the miser with generosity.
Conquer the liar with truth.
The Dhammapada
“However many holy words you read, how many
you speak, what good will they do you if you do not act upon them?".
The buddha
Heedfulness: the path to the Deathless.
Heedlessness: the path to death.
The heedful do not die.
The heedless are as if
already dead.
Dhammapada
Focus,
not on the rudenesses of others,
not on what they've done
or left undone,
but on what you
have & haven't done
yourself.
Dhammapada
No flower's scent
goes against the wind --
not sandalwood,
jasmine,
tagara.
But the scent of the good
does go against the wind.
The person of integrity
wafts a scent
in every direction.
Dhammapada
I will abide pervading one quarter with a mind imbued
with loving kindness...
likewise the second, likewise the third, likewise the fourth;
so above and below, around and everywhere; and to all as to myself.
I will abide pervading the all-encompassing world with a mind imbued
with loving kindness;
abundant, exalted, immeasurable, without hostility and without ill
will.
I will abide pervading one quarter with a mind imbued with compassion...
likewise the second, likewise the third, likewise the fourth;
so above and below, around and everywhere; and to all as to myself.
I will abide pervading the all-encompassing world with a mind imbued
with compassion;
abundant, exalted, immeasurable, without hostility and without ill
will.
I will abide pervading one quarter with a mind imbued with gladness...
likewise the second, likewise the third, likewise the fourth;
so above and below, around and everywhere; and to all as to myself.
I will abide pervading the all-encompassing world with a mind imbued
with gladness;
abundant, exalted, immeasurable, without hostility and without ill
will.
I will abide pervading one quarter with a mind imbued with equanimity...
likewise the second, likewise the third, likewise the fourth;
so above and below, around and everywhere; and to all as to myself.
I will abide pervading the all-encompassing world with a mind imbued
with equanimity;
abundant, exalted, immeasurable, without hostility and without ill
will.
Good or ill I will be the heir
Do not try to become anything.
Do not make yourself into anything.
Do not be a meditator.
Do not become enlightened.
When you sit, let it be.
What you walk, let it be.
Grasp at nothing.
Resist nothing.
Ajahn Chah
If we do not try, we will not know.
Ayya Khema, Be An Island
By amending our mistakes, we get wisdom.
By defending our faults, we betray an unsound mind.
The Sutra of Hui Neng
Anything that is created must sooner or later die.
Enlightenment is permanent because we have not produced it; we have
merely discovered it.
Chogyam Trungpa
Make an island of yourself,
make yourself your refuge;
there is no other refuge.
Make truth your island,
make truth your refuge;
there is no other refuge.
